Adult is 8-10 mm long, with a wing span opening up to 20 mm.
The colour of outer half of the front wings is chestnut red and the rest is yellow grey. Larvae are yellow white, 15-20 mm in length, with a chestnut red head.
Female lays 60-300 eggs, individually or in groups, on or near food products.
Eggs hatch in 2-14 days. Insect’s life cycle, under favorable conditions, is completed in 6-8 weeks. The first adults appear in April and under perfect conditions of temperature and humidity, there can be up to 5 breeds per year.
Pheromon traps are used to estimate populations of the insect.
Cereals and their products, nuts, chocolates, milk in powder and cocoa powder, are some of the food products, mostly infested by the insect.
