One of the largest beetles in stored products. Adult is 15-18mm long and has a dark brown to black shinny colour. Larva is up to 30mm long, has white to brown colour and it is known as the big worm of flour.
Female lays 300-600 eggs, individually or in groups, on cereal products (flour, bran); they hatch in 4-14 days.
Larva is resistant to low temperatures and adults appear during spring or early summer, living for 2-3 months. They live in dark and humid places, but they fly during the night, attracted by the lights.
They infest cereal products and are found in mills, bakeries, food store houses, etc.
